Changing The World, One Step at a Time

Not everybody can do the sacrifice that John Wood did in order to establish Room to Read organization. However, its success is also due to the everyday heroes that supported its cause:

  • A group of female employees and alumni of an investment bank collaborated to fund two schools in Nepal. 1
  • A mountain climber who celebrated his lifelong dream of climbing Mt. Everest by endowing 2 more schools in Nepal. 2
  • A ten year old boy sold more than 70,000 wristbands to raise funds to build 5 schools in Sri Lanka. 3
  • An eight year old girl saved her pocket money to help fund a school. And aftewards, sold raffle tickets to fund another school. 4
  • Local women carrying heavy bricks uphill to be able to contribute in building a school. 5

Here in the Philippines, as teachers, you can also do something within your own local community to help change the world:

  • Encourage parents to put their child to school. Encourage them to be involved in furthering their child's knowledge.
  • Make the community involved in sourcing, building the needed school resource.
  • Encourage your students to learn more.
  • Use whatever education materials available. The wealth of information available on the Internet today can help alleviate the lack of books and literature.

Most importantly, strive to learn more and share this with your students. By doing so, you increase the chance of your students knowing more and becoming better individuals.

Education and knowledge is a life-long gift. And you as teachers are in the best position to give that to a child.
